Ottawa Play & StayIndependent visitor guide

Gatineau, Quebec

Across the river: a bigger complex, under another province’s rules

Ottawa visitors are often pointed towards the casino hotel at Lac-Leamy. It is worth knowing about — and it is not in Ottawa, not in Ontario, and not governed by anything on the rest of this site.

Compare the two jurisdictions

Ontario — the Albion Road venue

  • Minimum age: 19+ on the gaming floor.
  • Who sets the rule: the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO).
  • Lottery and gaming corporation: the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG). iGaming Ontario (iGO) is a separate body that conducts and manages the regulated online market.
  • Helpline: ConnexOntario, 1-866-531-2600, free and confidential, 24 hours a day.
  • Self-exclusion: My PlayBreak, run by the provincial corporation.
  • Identification: Only valid government-issued photo identification is accepted; identification is checked on anyone who appears under 30; those 21 or younger need two pieces; identification may be scanned.

The blanks in the Quebec column are deliberate and they are the honest part of this page. A regulator, a helpline and a self-exclusion programme almost certainly exist on that side of the river. We did not verify which ones, and printing Ontario’s in their place would send someone to a service that cannot help them. Everything elsewhere on this site — the age line in the footer, the helpline number — is Ontario’s, and applies to the Ontario venue.

The hotel is rated five stars by the Corporation de l’industrie touristique du Québec since 2001. The casino floor is published with more than 65 tables, covering roulette, blackjack, baccarat, craps and Texas hold’em poker, together with a multigame space with live hosts and a sports-betting lounge. The number of slot machines is the one figure this guide will not print: two respectable sources give different totals, and a visitor gains nothing from a number that might be wrong.

Entertainment on site runs to the Théâtre du Casino du Lac-Leamy, approximately 1,100 seats, the ALÉA nightclub and Bar 7. The restaurants currently published by the operator are Arôme, in the hotel, Banco Bistro, in the casino, L’Instant, TGV. Older guides list a further restaurant that no longer appears in the operator’s own listings, so if you are working from a printed guidebook, check before you plan a dinner around it.

Practicalities

Hours, parking and the things that catch people out

  • Casino hours: Monday to Thursday from 09:00 until 05:00 the following morning; Friday to Sunday open continuously, 24 hours.
  • Hotel: check-in from 16:00, check-out by 11:00; in-room dining 06:30 to 22:30 daily.
  • Parking: free indoor and outdoor parking, valet for hotel guests, spaces for recreational vehicles though no camping, and electric-vehicle charging.
  • Spa and water: Amerispa, plus heated indoor and outdoor pools and hot tubs, year round.
  • Setting: set on the shores of Lac Leamy and Lac de la Carrière, with a large fountain on the adjacent lake and an on-site heliport.
  • Environmental certification: BOMA BEST Platinum certification in 2023 and 4 Green Keys.
  • Dress: Appropriate attire is required, and clothing depicting violence or associated with a recognised violent group is prohibited.
How far is it from downtown Ottawa? We do not know, and we are not going to estimate. No source consulted for this edition gave an official distance or drive time between downtown Ottawa and the Gatineau complex, and a made-up figure would be exactly the kind of detail a copied guide gets wrong. Use a live mapping service on the day, and account for bridge traffic.

Booking works the same way as everywhere else on this site: with the venue, not with us. The casino and complex line is 819-772-2100 or 1-800-665-2274; the hotel’s own numbers are 1-819-790-6444 and 1-866-488-7888; the operator publishes the property at casinos.lotoquebec.com/en/lacleamy.

Questions

Crossing the river, briefly answered

Is the Lac-Leamy casino in Ottawa?

No. It is in Gatineau, Quebec, across the Ottawa River. It is in a different province with a different operator and different rules.

What is the minimum age there?

Eighteen, as published by the operator. Ontario’s minimum of 19 does not apply on the Quebec side.

Does the Ontario helpline cover Quebec?

This guide does not extend Ontario’s helpline, regulator or self-exclusion programme across the provincial boundary. Quebec’s equivalents were not verified for this edition, so none is named here. Ask the venue for the Quebec resources it publishes.
